Prepare for an overdose of happiness and quirkiness all in one go! Morne and Liezl’s fabulously unusual and unique wedding day was completely handmade from their made-with-love quilt favours and stationery to the bridesmaids dresses, bouquets and decor!

The bride always wanted a colourful wedding overflowing with bright flowers and quirky décor. Her wedding dream came true with the help of her immensely talented mum who helped her pull off a quirky yellow wedding with touches of pretty pinks and demure greys all perfectly snapped up by photographer, Adene.

To top it all off, Liezl wore a truly fabulous dress from Kobus Dippenaar Atelier‘s latest bridal collection, which we featured exclusively with a behind the scenes Q & A with the designer: Kobus Dippenaar Bridal 2014 Premiere {Exclusive}.

(Above) Quirky Yellow Bridesmaids Look: The bride’s mother found a beautiful piece of fabric with soft yellow flowers, which had a vintage look. She made two funky little boob tube dresses with extra broad belts around the waist and pockets on the side for the bridesmaids.

The sweet couple exchanged vows under a 300 year old Oak tree on a perfect day.

Morne and Liezl’s Love Story

Liezl shares their special love story: A few years ago me and Morne met through a mutual friend and instantly became attracted to one another. We spent a lot of time together as friends and at the end of 2011 decided to turn our good friendship into a relationship. We have the same values, ambitions and sense of humour. He really makes me laugh! Only 8 months into our relationship we both knew we wanted to spend the rest of our lives together and got engaged.

The Tale Of Their Proposal

Liezl dishes out the short, but sweet tale of Morne’s proposal:  In June 2012 we bought a house together and on the 7th of August, Morne went down on one knee, took out the most gorgeous ring and proposed to me on the site of our newly bought house. It was totally unexpected. There were a lot of happy tears as I said YES.

 Quirky Yellow Outdoor Wedding Reception

The reception was held at the Café Felix restaurant,  South Africa, which has an old feel garden outside. As it was so beautiful under the Oak trees, not much décor was needed to make their reception pretty. Liezl and her mum took care of all the décor and wedding stationery.

(Above) Quirky Outdoor Wedding  Stationery: Liezl handmade all the stationary  (with a little bit of help from the groom!). This included their wedding invites, the rustic frame table layout, booklets for the ceremony and thank you tags, including 2400 striped confetti hearts that were punched out one by one by the couple.

(Above) Quirky Outdoor Wedding Guest Book: Instead of having a guest book, Liezl made note cards for the guests to write their messages to the bride and groom.

Quirky Outdoor Wedding  Decor: Everything was handmade. The pom-pom shaped flower arrangements, handmade origami lanterns, hessian table runners and white cotton bunting. To add a little fun they had a variety of vintage ceramic animals on each table – some of which were painted yellow. The Darling Brew favours for the men and the made-with-love quilts for the ladies also formed part of the table decorations.

(Above) DIY Quirky Outdoor Wedding Favours: As their reception was held outdoors, each female guest received a little handmade quilt to keep them warm during the evening. To make the quilts, they cut plenty of off-cut pieces of fabric into 20cm squares and stitched them together in rows of eight. Seven rows were then stitched together. Fleecy fabric was attached to the back of the quilt. A few crochet yarn knots tied the squares in front to the fleecy back.

(Above) Quirky Wedding  Cake: The wedding cake was a vanilla cake baked by the groom’s grandmother. It was a two tier cake and decorated with white cream cheese frosting. Liezl’s mum crocheted grey and yellow flowers, which they glued onto sticks and then arranged on top of the cake. They also found two quirky vintage ceramic rabbits (husband and wife) that served as their cake toppers.

Real Bride, Liezl’s, Tips For Brides-To-Be

  • Search as many wedding blogs as you can for fresh new ideas. Remember to adapt and make them personal.
  • Enjoy this special time of planning. Even though stress can sometimes interfere, don’t take it too seriously, because everything doesn’t always go as planned.
  • Remember, grooms also like to be part of the planning process. Involve your groom.
  • DIY, DIY, DIY! Do as much as you can yourself. Ask friends and family to help. They will turn hard work into fun. Flea markets can also render cheap and useful vintage props.
