A Glittering Gold & White Carnival of Love! ♥
Oh my, I’m not sure where to start with today’s absolute feast for the eyes! Margaux & Rob’s wedding is certainly one not to be missed. “We wanted our wedding to be a very relaxed and wanted to do something that wasn’t the inorm’,” shares Margaux. “So, we decided on a “Carnival theme” – we had fun, food stalls as well as a kissing booth made to create a Carnival vibe. We also had beer and cider on tap.”
In addition to a super stunning bride and a good looking groom, their celebration featured a a farmstyle photo booth, bridesmaids in mix and match sequinned dressed and a Janita Toerien gown that is going to knock your socks off! Captured by Claire Thomson Photography get ready to sit back, relax and squeal.
Their Love Story and Proposal {With Proposal Video}:
Robert and I are high school sweethearts, we have been together since we were 17. We were assigned to walk together at our schools fashion show in grade 11 and have been happy and in love ever since : )
Robert went all out for this one!!! He set up a timeline of photos in Charly’s Bakery, for every year we spent together and at the end of the timeline were “Will you marry me” cupcakes! Which I totally missed!!! As I turned around to ask him what was going on, he was on his knee in the middle of the bakery (full of customers, might I add) with the most gorgeous ring i’d ever seen! Shortly afterwards, our parents walked in to celebrate with us over champagne and cupcakes. No better way to celebrate! : )
Margaux & Rob’s Farm Carnival Wedding
From the Bride:
Our wedding day as well as the build up to the wedding was incredibly special as it was the first wedding on my husbands family farm. We also renovated the shed where we had the ceremony, so we could really make it our own. There were so many things that personalized our wedding, i.e. each serviette was stamped with a monogram; as each couple entered the shed for the ceremony, they were handed a “Carnival themed” programme from a ticket booth; there was no designated seating area, everyone could move around and sit where they wanted, popcorn, fruit skewers and fries were available at the food stalls and we had burgers served as mains. We also had special banners made at the entrance of the farm as well as at the entrance of the venue.
Janita Toerien Wedding Dress:
I had my dress made by Janita Toerien. The bodice consisted of two different laces layered over each other with gorgeous layers of soft Italian tulle for the bottom half. I decided to not line the tulle as I wanted it to be slightly sheer in the light. The different lengths of tulle created a hazy, soft look to the skirt. The back of the dress was my favourite – we managed to find beautiful embellished trims to finish off the look. I was incredibly comfortable all day and had a ball dancing in the dress!
Bridesmaids:
We had a big bridal party so were very happy to find dresses and suits that we could buy, instead of having them all made. I liked the concept of having a few different dresses but all in the same fabric. The girls had heart-shaped black boards with a message for Robert instead of bouquets.
The Groom & Groomsmen’s Attire:
Robert wore a navy suit with black satin tipping. He looked very handsome! The groomsmen wore black suits with bowties. As the groom & groomsmen are all surfers, we decided to let them feel at home in their sneakers! : )
Wedding Ceremony Decor:
The guests were welcomed by 3 amazing chandeliers at the entrance of the shed and the ceiling was draped in white fabric and fairy lights. To add to the relaxed atmosphere, our guests sat on covered hay bales. The shed was filled with candles & flowers and created a very tranquil feel.
Wedding Party Entrances:
To change things up a bit, Robert and his groomsmen entered the shed to “I will wait for you” from Mumford and Sons. This gave the boys their very own moment of glory and automatically created a buzz.
The bridesmaids walked down the aisle to “Ho Hey” from The Lumineers and I entered with my dad to the traditional wedding march. We signed the register to “Hallelujah” – such a profound song!
Wedding Reception:
Our reception was held in a stripe marquee tent on the grass outside the shed, it was beautifully decorated with buntings, ribbons & fairy lights. This was perfectly teamed with a white & gold stripe dance floor. As mentioned previously, we did not have a seating chart – we wanted people to mingle and move around. We had a mix of hay bales, bean bags and lounges to create the relaxed atmosphere. To continue the carnival theme, we had mustache and lip props on the tables as well as pin wheels. We also had a kissing booth made which we used for our outdoor photo-booth.
Wedding Playlist:
Robert and I fell in love with the words from John Legends “All of me” – it’s a song he wrote for his fiance and it just totally hit home for us. We used this song for our first dance. We went for dance lessons and had an edited version of the song but the DJ played the full version which left Robert and I pretty stumped in front of our 130 guests. We totally winged the dance and don’t think anyone noticed!! : )
DIY Touches:
- We made signs out of old wood & palettes we found on the farm, which we used along the farm road to direct guests to the actual venue.
- We also collected old tins and glass bottles and spray painted them gold – these were used for flowers on the tables & hay bales.
- We also made use of tables and chairs from my parents home so we didn’t have to hire too much.
- Old fruit bins from the farm made for perfect stalls for the beer kegs on tap and we got a friend to design special labels for the beer glasses. (“I do brew” and “To have and to hold and to drink while its cold”)
Wedding Advice:
- Don’t renovate the venue you planning on getting married in! Haha!! The plumber literally walked out as the guests walked in. But besides for that, I learnt that you can’t get caught up in all the little things. The guests will remember the great party and the good food, not necessarily what flowers you had on the table. Decide what’s important for you upfront and focus on that.
- There are so many things that you can do yourself – just make sure you give yourself enough time to make it all.
- I found speaking to friends that had recently gotten married so helpful. They had great tips and I booked most of my vendors based on recommendations.

We could not have pulled this wedding off without the hard work and support of our families. From installing chandeliers to making signs, they were there for it all. A big thank you to each and every one of you!!
