Sanél and Jacobus’s Love Story
Theirs was a brief love story that was coming along long before the pair become a couple. High school sweethearts, Sanél and Jacobus began dating in Grade 11, which she admits was long after she had already developed a crush on him!
The Tale of their Proposal
The tale of their proposal was equally sweet. Sanél tells us that after Christmas, Jacobus had decided to take her on a motorcycle ride along Seapoint, Houtbay and Chapman’s Peak for the day. It was a beautiful sunny day and they stopped at a lookout point to admire to the amazing view of the sea.
As she was taking photos of the sea with her camera, he asked her, “Don’t you want to take a picture of this?” and as she turned around he was there on his one knee with a ring in a little black box! “I was soooo quiet and dumbstruck and then of course I said, YES!” says Sanél.
The couple’s loved ones celebrated the exchange of their vows with colourful wedding streamers before heading off to the Cape Winelands farm surroundings for their first photos as newlyweds!
Colourful Winelands Wedding Reception
Their outdoor wedding reception would make you smile. Hosted at the Le Pommier wedding venue situated along Helshoogte Pass, near to Stellenbosch, guests were treated to grin-inducing colours and a mountain backdrop, which created a relaxed and beautiful outdoor venue for their reception. Sanél tells us that Hartebessiebos had the most amazing decor ideas, which fit perfectly with the vision they had in mind.

(Above) Even the bride’s grandfather jumped in to help with the wedding decor! Using tins that he collected from a local supermarket store every week, Sanél’s grandfather started planting succulents in tins, which he made rusty.
Sanél was a true DIY bride having made the seating name tags, table names, thank you notes and guestbook herself.
Colourful DIY Seating Plan: The seating plan was created using an old door frame with missing window panes and paint. Strips of ribbon and lace fabric in purple, turquoise and pink were strung across the frame to create lines for the seating tags to be hung from.
Representing the various tables, each line was pegged with a different table name sign. The tables were uniquely named after cute love-related words in Afrikaans such My Liefde (My Love), My Hartjie (My Heart) and Klapsoen (Kiss)!

(Above) DIY Colourful Table Name Signs: Sanél’s uncle helped create the little blackboard signs that were placed all around the venue in the succulent decorations.
(Above) DIY Colourful Wedding Favours: The bride and her aunt baked the heart-shaped “soetkoekies” – sweet cookies with pink icing, which was displayed on each guest’s colourful napkin. Guests were also encouraged to help themselves to a “vetplantjie” – succulent plant tins created by her grandfather, which both formed part of the table decor.
